Brown:
I
need to start by saying that music has been one of the most
important parts of my life as long as I can remember. My parents
were both into music in one way or another and i guess it
rubbed off on me. My mom had played wind instruments in high
school and still occassionally plays the keyboard. My dad
was a drummer in a band in high school called "The Rainy
Daze". Both were avid listeners of music and encouraged
us (my Brother, Sister, and I) to get into music at an early
age. So I picked drums in 4th grade and started playing them
in the 5th grade. I played the drums in Band all the way through
high school and got greatly involved with drum line. Becoming
good friends with one of the best Jazz drummers and one of
the best Jazz bass players in the State of Iowa didn't hurt
my musical education, either. Kyle and Ward, I learned a lot
from you two. Some of it even had to do with music! Thanks,
guys.
I
didn't pick up the guitar until I was in 10th or 11th grade,
when my parents gave me an old Harmony guitar for Christmas
that was in the basement of one of my relatives homes. I'm
not sure anyone really knew where it came from. I only started
singing because G, C, and D chords were getting boring playing
them instrumentally. I sang in a couple different cover bands
in college and played some original stuff with some great
friends. A huge thanks to my second family in Studio 458 who
helped contribute to the mayhem... those are days I will never
forget. Some may be hazy, but definitely not forgotten. I'll
always remember "Huntin' Man".
I
didn't really get into doing my own thing until I moved to
Denver. I tried jamming and singing with some bands in town
and played a few practices with another, but it ended rather
poorly, so I found some decent players on my own and called
it "Battery Park". The band has had it's share of
evolution, but as soon as Kevin and Chaz came on board, it
stopped being "my band" and became "our band".
That was in the fall of 2000 and it keeps getting better.
I absolutely love the rest of this band and everyone in our
support crew and feel blessed for every minute I get to play
music with these guys. There are so many people who have helped
and continue to contribute to this beast we call Battery Park.
Thank you all for your love and support helping us chase our
dream and giving us the chance to do what we love. There is
no way we could do any of it without you.
Oh,
ya...Go Packers!!
Peace
-j
